Borrowing Bling: The Appeal of Hip-hop to Young White Men

Rap music, a genre that developed in the United States in the 1970s, has its roots in the music of West African storytellers, musicians, and poets known as Griots (“Hip-Hop”). Rap, which includes both DJing and MCing, is one of the elements of the “Hip-Hop” cultural movement. The other major elements of hip-hop culture are graffiti and breakdancing (“Hip-Hop”). Hip-hop has had a major impact on society through fashion as well. According to the Wikipedia entry on hip-hop, “Contemporary hip-hop fashion includes the wearing of baggy jeans slung low around the waist, gold or platinum chains and boots or a fresh pair of kicks, and bandanas or doo rags tied around the head often worn with a baseball cap on top.” These days, a trip to any high school or shopping mall in America will reveal numerous examples of this kind of fashion.
Baggy jeans slung low, makes me think back to the belts that used to be worn in Indian culture that symbolized virility or sexuality. The color gold is said to be a masculine color associated with the male god, likewise silver is associated with the female goddess. Aside from that it might have to do with a sign of status or of being in a "caste" of society. Bandanas, doo rags, and baseball caps would be similar to the Jewish yamaka except that instead of protecting one from spiritual influences it protects one from being influenced by society. What boots could represent, straight from a dream dictionary, "refers to the power in your movement and the boldness of your position, taking a firm stance."
Hip-hop grew out of African traditions, arose in African American urban areas, and is performed almost exclusively by African Americans. Yet hip-hop has gained an audience of a large number of young, white males in the United States. Across the U.S. suburbs, white adolescent males are adopting the hip-hop style of dress, using hip-hop language, and buying millions of rap records each year. Over seventy percent of hip-hop music sales are made to white consumers (Maclean). What explains hip-hop’s enormous appeal to young white men? A number of factors—personal, social, and economic—appear to be behind this phenomenon.
On a personal level, hip-hop appeals to young, white males because it allows them to escape from the constraints of white society and experience the world of the rapper. Rap music details the life of the African American, sometimes describing a violent and gritty life on the street, or alternatively, a life filled with the glamor of flashy jewelry, nice cars, women, and money. Both of these world views differ vastly from the often insulated, predictable world of the young white adolescent. Professor Fiona Mills interviewed young white rap listeners for her essay “Rap and Young, White Males: Masculinity, Masking, and Denial.” Essentially, he implies that young, white men are drawn to the escapist and exotic aspects of rap and little else. Given the fact that my white informants reported that their interest in rap waned dramatically once they grew older, it is a short-lived embrace, for these youth most often "outgrow" this fascination.
The appeal or being able to relate to a violent or gritty life in the psychological sense could be all about "will to power" (Nietzsche/Adler) or as Darwin put it, survival of the fittest. Wherein flashy jewelry, nice cars, money, women is all about the "will to pleasure" coined by Freud. Many pleasurable experiences are associated with satisfying basic biological drives, such as eating, exercise or sex. Other pleasurable experiences are associated with social experiences and social drives, such as the experiences of accomplishment, recognition, and service. The appreciation of cultural artifacts and activities such as art, music, and literature is often pleasurable. Recreational drug use can be pleasurable: some drugs, illicit and otherwise, directly create euphoria in the human brain when ingested. The mind's natural tendency to seek out more of this feeling (as described by the pleasure principle) can lead to dependence and addiction. Berridge and Robinson have proposed that addiction results from drugs hijacking the ‘wanting’ system through a sensitization of the mesolimbic dopamine system. (Pleasure - Wikipedia) I think however that most people have a more eclectic view, incorporating both Will to Pleasure and Will to Power also including "Will to Meaning" (Victor Frankl) which is also known as logotherapy. Most of us in the Western world of the United States is driven by a combination of the above to varying degrees. And lastly as it mentioned the escaping from reality aspect that might appeal to some individuals.
But hip-hop is more than an outlet for personal fantasy. It can also provide a highly defined alternative culture which appeals to the young, white man who may have trouble finding himself within white culture, or who may consciously reject white culture. The fact that hip-hop especially appeals to young men at a time in their lives when they are seeking to define themselves as adults supports this theory. For a white teenager trying desperately to establish himself as a unique person, hip-hop style may appeal because it is something he can easily recognize and emulate, and something which then sets him apart from his white peers,. It is a means for situating himself in society.
White culture predominantly doesn't provide any coming of age rituals with the exception of losing one's virginity and graduation, some include other things like a "keg stand" or a weekend in Vegas to soothe either a mid-life crisis or a relationship ending or beginning, like marriage. Such is the way in our fast-paced society. In other cultures like Judaism and Native American they have defined rules on how a boy becomes a man. In Judaism a celebration is thrown, a bar mitzvah ceremony at the age of 12 for boys and this time also coincides with the onset of puberty. After this age, children bear their own responsibility for Jewish ritual law, tradition, and ethics and are privileged to participate in all areas of Jewish community life.  More natural or native tribes often have the boy perform his first hunt, circumcision, or for him to stay in the wild with other men to learn how to be a man and bond with the land or to have his first vision.
Additionally, Mills explains that rap music, with its focus on sex, money, drugs and violence, builds a hyper-masculine aura” that white adolescent males are drawn to because it gives them a model for establishing their masculinity. As Mills revealed in her study, white males often begin listening to music around age twelve or thirteen, just as they are entering adolescence and beginning to establish their masculine identities. In contrast, Mills found that African American males reported listening to rap music from a very young age. Mills suggests that the white adolescents she interviewed saw rap music “as a way of asserting their manhood by associating themselves with an overly masculine culture—one I which femininity had no place.”
Personally I think most guys worry about being "masculine." First of all if nature birthed you into this life as a guy and you have the equipment and necessary hormones that makes you a man then what do you really need to prove? In the above example, it leads to an unbalanced psyche since we all have an inner animus/anima and to make one hyper makes the other hypo.
Rap music also appeals to young white men because it is a way to rebel against their parents and white society in general. By associating themselves with a musical culture that involves heavy use of profane language and often centers on violence and drugs, white males establish their rebellion against societal standards. Many teens may like rap for the simple fact that their parents do not approve of its foul language, portrayal of violence, and treatment of women.
There was once a time when early rock was rebelling against society and one's parents, nowadays early rock sounds like country. Many teens don't know what they want and rebel for the sake or rebelling due to unruly hormones I gather or to assert their individuality. Rebelling against one's parents can be liberating if its done for the sake of expanding beyond the confines of who they are as an individual, plus it helps to integrate some of the shadowy side of the psyche. I'm all for moving beyond the scope of societal standards because they can be quite confining, though some moral standards should be kept intact otherwise chaos would ensue.
These factors all help explain why young white men might be drawn to hip-hop and rap music and what they might gain from adopting its cultural markers. But do these factors alone explain hip-hop’s enormous popularity with white consumers? There are many other types of music and culture that might appeal to white adolescents on the same grounds s hop-hop. Why has hop-hop become such a huge cultural phenomenon?
Marketing may well be the answer. Hip-hop historian and journalist Davey D has chronicled the economic pressures that led to hip-hop being marketed directly to white audiences. Historically, advertisers and record companies have cared little about young African American consumers, who typically have less disposable income than white consumers. Young white males, on the other hand, are a key demographic that all marketers pursue. As Davey D puts it, “as major corporations saw lots of white kids getting down with hop-hop, they decided to do whatever it took to appeal to what is considered a lucrative demographic….What this all boiled down to was there was a premium placed on white/more affluent listeners. Many corporations simply did want to attract a young African American clientele.” To attract a white clientele, Davey D argues, record companies and promoters began putting out hip-hop acts that fed white stereotypes about African Americans. As a result, “in 2003 you have a genre of music that was born in the harshest ghettos outselling any other music and now attracting the desired Holy Grail for corporate advertisers—white folks 18-34 [translation: Generation X].”
If Davey D’s argument is correct, then the popularity of hip-hop among young white men is cause for concern. While cultural crossover is in many ways a good thing and can help promote understanding among people, some feel that hip-hop is being used to manipulate consumers and even promote racial stereotypes. If true, this would be a sad statement about today's white hop-hop fans. Like white audiences at a 1920s vaudeville show, they could be exposed to a parody of African American culture and think it was the real thing.
The only other closing statement I could make is maybe rap appeals to people because it addresses some unconscious anger that is suppressed or repressed and the music induces or provides a gateway that it can be stimulated and acted out.

Harry Potter Symbolism

"J.K. Rowling has said that one of her goals was to create a world accessible to those who know where to look. (See walking between train platforms and the fireplace as a boundary between worlds)"

Philospher's / Sorcerer's Stone

Philosopher's Stone - Alchemy

As you can see in the photo it makes a Star of David, a symbol found in both Jewish cultures as well as Hindu; though in the Hindu culture its a symbol for the heart chakra.

"The 'squared circle' or 'squaring the circle' is a 17th century alchemical glyph or symbol for the creation of the Philosopher's Stone. The Philosopher's Stone was supposed to be able to transmute base metals into gold and perhaps be an elixir of life."

Most often times than not, the quest for immortality was sought through material means via external alchemy. Some societies and groups however knew and pursued other methods, mostly through meditation, this was internal alchemy. That sought path is big in Eastern cultures, very few cultures in the West follow it except Golden Dawn (Thelema) and other Kabala groups.

Lightning Mark

The lightning flash of creation on the Tree of Life, how spiritual or divine energy is stepped down into physical reality.

Owls - aside from being a messenger they could have had other meanings. Owls are creatures we associate with wisdom, maybe its from the big eyes that can see everything (much like a wise person can see things advance due to foresight and previous experiences) or maybe its the versatility of the owl being able to turn his neck, able to see what lies both behind him and in front of him. In the dreaming or totem sense owls are associated with clairvoyance and the unconscious. A more abstract link could be associating the owl with Lilith, since it was her sacred animal. In this instance the owl is tapping into the most ancient of feminine archetypes. For those that don't know the story of Lilith she was the first woman, made before Eve was, how she was made varies in the rendition of the story. Some sources say she was made from fire or ashes, others say she was made from clay or mud like Adam was. Both sources above demonstrate why she might be rebellious, fire is hard to control and she wouldn't listen or take orders from Adam because they were both made from the same thing so she seen them as equals. Eventually she goes her own way, leaving the garden.

Wand - phallic symbol or reference, in various pagan or magic circles the wand is symbolic of the fire element and of masculine sexuality. Those same groups often teach how to control and direct that sexual energy (kundalini) to help them attain their goals.

Chamber of Secrets

Chamber of Secrets - Makes me think of the Akashic Records.

Diary - As quoted from J.K. Rowling "a very scary object". She said in an interview, "The temptation particularly for a young girl, is to pour out her heart to a diary."

Phoenix - symbolizes transformation, immortality and renewal. A new phase in life. It may also mean that the past continues to haunt someone.

Parseltongue - A biblical reference perhaps? Eve conversing with the serpent. I take it differently then how it is described or portrayed in the bible. Must be my offbeat Aquarian eccentricity. :D

Basilisk - Greek for "little king;" (Latin Regulus) is a legendary reptile reputed to be king of serpents and said to have the power to cause death with a single glance. So venomous that it leaves a wide trail of deadly venom in its wake. Possible kundalini reference.

Prisoner of Azkaban

Sirius Black - Sirius the 'dog star'. A sign of an intense (dog days of) summer if seen in the night sky.

Dementors - Dark creatures with the power to devour a human soul. Much like our own inner demons.

Goblet of Fire

Mermaids - feminine symbol but rather than the typical mermaid ideal these mermaids are more like sirens.
  • Reflection, the consideration of lifes struggles, Enforced Sacrifice. Punishment, Loss. Fatal and not voluntary. Suffering generally.
  • The force contained, the seed of manifestation guerdoned in the consciousness, Wisdom sought for and obtained from above. Actively seeking Divine Inspiration.
  • The sphere of Nature upon instinctual forces, victory over instinctual forces. (i.e. war, conquest, victory, strife, ambition, sex.)

Goblet - womb/feminine symbol used across all ages and all religions. In various pagan or magic circles the goblet is symbolic of the water element, the moon and of feminine sexuality. Those same groups often teach how to control and direct that sexual energy (kundalini) to help them attain their goals.

Slavery - power over the weak

Astrology - "Trelawney tries to guess where Harry's planets were, thinking it was midwinter because of his coloring and tragic past (Saturn is often melancholic or tragic; Sagittarius or Capricorn for midwinter) but was wrong. Harry then corrects her and says his birthday is in July."
(making him a Cancer or Leo, though I'm leaning toward Cancer since he is moody and keeps to himself or a small group of friends that he considers family, and is not flashy or assertive like a Leo would be)

3 Unforgiveable Curses:

The Killing Curse - Avada Kedavra stems from archaic Sanskrit words meaning "From life, nothing". It has the opposite root meaning of the phrase "Abra Cadabra", which means "From nothing, life".

The Cruciatus Curse - Means "I torture" in Latin, originating from crux (genitive crucis), which means "torture platform or stake", or more specifically, "cross". The word excruciating is descended from the same root - crucifixion was a form of torturous execution.

The Imperius Curse - "Imperio" is Latin for "I command".

Order of the Phoenix

Giants - gigantic peoples are featured as primeval creatures associated with chaos and the wild nature, and they are frequently in conflict with the gods, be they Olympian, Nartian, Hindu or Norse. Fairy tales such as Jack and the Beanstalk have formed our modern perception of giants as stupid and violent monsters, frequently said to eat humans, and especially children. However, in some more recent portrayals, like those of Roald Dahl, some giants are both intelligent and friendly. The giants are the origin of most of various monsters in Norse mythology, and in the eventual battle of Ragnarök (Armageddon/Apocalypse) the giants will storm Asgard and defeat them in war. Even so, the gods themselves were related to the giants by many marriages. Medieval romances feature giants as antagonists, or, rarely, as allies.

That which we do not understand, we fear, like the giants in the story.

Order of the Phoenix - a secret society founded by Albus Dumbledore to oppose Lord Voldemort and his

Death Eaters. A secret order that disbands and reforms like that of the reborn phoenix.

Half-Blood Prince

Horcrux - "an object in which a Dark wizard or witch has hidden a fragment of his or her soul for the purpose of attaining immortality. the creation of a Horcrux requires one to commit a murder, which, as the supreme act of evil, it rips the soul apart. After the murder, a spell is cast to infuse part of the ripped soul into an object, which becomes the Horcrux."

The idea behind the Horcrux reminds me of Shamanic soul retrieval that returns fragments of the soul that were split by trauma.

"Horcruxes are extremely difficult to destroy. They cannot be destroyed by conventional means such as smashing, breaking, or burning. To be destroyed, a Horcrux must suffer damage so severe that repair through magical means would be impossible. Very few magical objects or spells are powerful enough to achieve this. Once a Horcrux is irreparably damaged, the fragment of soul within it is destroyed."

This reminds me of a term I once came across, deicide, it means the act of killing a divine being such as a deity. By that logic, I would think our soul or spirit is made from the same 'fabric' that a deity is, they can just control the 'fabric' due to their mastery over the substance.

"A Horcrux can be magically undone only if the creator goes through a process of deep remorse for the murder committed to create the Horcrux. The pain of this remorse is so excruciating that the process itself may kill the creator."

I believe I once came across something that said a soul or spirit can kill itself if it truly wants to, mostly due to too much past lives of trauma. I was in researching mode and came across it through reincarnation and Buddhism, a person was recalling and telling of their lives. One of those lives had such a trauma, but was able to be dealt with.

Regulus Arcturus Black -
Father was Orion, Ursula, Grandfathers were Arcturus and Pollux, Cygnus aunt, Cassiopeia 2nd cousin, brother was Sirius, a cousin named Andromeda. Named after stars, constellations, or star systems.

Regulus - king (Latin)
Not much to interpret here, a reference to royalty.

Arcturus - guardian/watcher of the bear (Greek/Latin); the uplifted one of the lancer, the keeper of heaven (Arabic); Great Horn (Chinese); The Old Man, The First Ones (Inuit);  Star which converts dew drops into pearls (Hindu); Star of Boat (Indonesia)

Orion - The Hunter (Greek); The Heavenly Shepherd, True Shepherd of Anu (Babylonian/Sumerian); associated with Osiris (Egypt); Nimrod, Great Hunter/warrior and mythological Father of Hungarians; Scythe of Väinämöinen, comes from the time of harvesting crops; The Deer or Hart (Indian); Fire Drill (Aztec); Star of Plough (Indonesia); Aurvandil "luminous wanderer" (Old Norse); Orion's descendants were Nephilim (Aram/Syria)

Ursula - Freya, goddess of love, beauty, fertility, war and death (Norse); Orsel/Ursel a moon/bear goddess (German); Artemis, goddess of the hunt, took the form of a bear (Greek); Matsu Po, queen of heaven and the sea (Chinese);

Pollux - one of the Heavenly Twins (Gemini); End of the Paw (Latin); North River (Chinese);

Cygnus - Swan (Greek); the Northern Cross

Cassiopeia - "She whose words excel" (Greek); Queen of Ethiopia, beautiful but also arrogant and vain; led to her downfall.

Sirius - glowing, scorcher (Greek/Latin); The Leader (Arabic); Hunter/Deer Hunter/Shiva (Sanskrit);  Loki's Torch (Norse); blue star, celestial wolf (Chinese/Japanese); Dog Star, Great Dog, Orion's Dog; Dog-Face, Wolf/Coyote star (Native American); Moon Dog (Inuit);

Andromeda - "chained lady/woman", Perseus' wife, Cepheus' daughter; (Greek/Latin); horse, navel

Regulus, since it means "king" is an obvious reference of royalty along with pearls and swan. Keeper of Heaven and The First Ones is a reference like saying their blood is pure and untainted like angels or like they are from heaven. The hunter/warrior has to do with power, the strong survive and should control, guide, or "shepherd" the weak or impure. Or maybe even to hunt the weak for sport. Luminous wanderer and nephilim is another heavenly pure reference because beings of heaven (angels or nephilim that fell) are supposed to glow or have a halo and all that jazz. Moon and Northern directions deal with the dark and pale colored skin which is what all of the supposed "pure-bloods" have.

Deathly Hallows

'An ideogram from the seventeenth century representing the art of alchemy. This symbol shows the influence of Pythagorean geometry mysticism. It can also be perceived as a symbol for the four elements combined with water as the small inner circle, earth as the square, fire as the triangle, and air as the outer circle.'
I have also seen an alternate meaning of this symbol and it was defined as being a symbol for a void.

This symbol represents Kundalini, the serpent energy. It is the same symbol as the caduceus that we see denoting medical related things.

Kundalini is a Sanskrit word that refers to a coiled energy (like a snake or serpent) that lies at the base of the spine. It only should be awakened after the chakras are strengthened and opened to handle the intensity of it, otherwise its said to be more harmful much like the snake symbol associated with it; the snake can poison you with its venom but its that very same venom that is needed to make an antidote.

Chakras is a Sanskrit word that means wheel or vortex. They are said to make up our spiritual body (soul). There is 7 major chakras of the body from root to crown. The root is at the base of the spine or the tailbone. The sacral is located at the sacrum/hips. The solar plexus, is right below where the upward part of the ribs meet and an inch below that. The heart is self-explanatory. The throat is at the middle of the throat where the Adam's Apple is. The third eye, sources vary, some say its directly between the eyebrows, some says its the center of the forehead. The crown is self-explanatory.

Lastly you can look at the chakras from a psychological point of view. What I mean specifically is it can be in direct relation with growth and maturation. How the first 0 - 7 years of our life is all about survival, we depend on parents to survive and teach us the basics about living and hygiene. Next comes puberty and the development of our reproductive system at 7 - 14 years. 14 - 21 would be about power, we find our strength on something that we are good at, a career that we will pursue in life. 21 - 28 is about family and love, settling down and raising a family. 28 - 35 is about following that inner voice or inner calling in our life, often causing trouble or turmoil in most and referred to as midlife crisis. 35 - 42 I would say is about knowledge and wisdom. . 42 - 49+ I would think would be about learning to take our wisdom and synthesize it into intuition, learning to do thing in balance and moderation, to know our limits, to retire and relax in old age.

Now I understand that mainstream science and medicine consider all of this alternative for one reason or another, but why I do not know. I say that because each of these chakras is directly connected to an endocrine gland along with nerve plexuses. The root chakra is associated with the prostate gland (Skene's gland) but could be the adrenals as well, since the end of the spine it is basically the switch for the nervous system to go into sympathetic mode (awake, alert, fight or flight mode) or parasympathetic mode (relaxed to depressed if the parasympathetic takes over too much); it is a part of the coccygeal plexus. The sacral chakra is connected to the reproductive organs and the sacral and lumbar plexus. The solar chakra is linked with the solar and lumbar plexus and is associated with the pancreas and kidneys. The heart chakra is joined with the pericardium or thymus, and is a part of the brachial plexus. The throat chakra is coupled with the thyroid/parathyroid, being a part of the cervical plexus. The third eye chakra is conjoined with the pineal gland is linked with the choroid plexus. The crown chakra is attributed to the pituitary gland, it also being a part of the choroid plexus.

Aside from all of that, you can also see the connections of the nerve or nerve plexuses in regards to the disks of the spine; like the work chiropractors do.

My personal opinion about why people liked Harry Potter so much is that it is relevant to what is going on deep in the collective unconscious mind of society. I see it as a sort of stepping back into the ways of old (pagan, magic), to rekindle our awe and wonder, like that of the inspiration and enthusiasm of children. At the time of the first book and first film, Wicca and other similar pagan based religions were on the rise. Why I feel they were on the rise is that in those faiths women are more empowered, so its a way of women re-empowering themselves or re-claiming their power. Much like how the Story of Lilith has become quite popular in modern times, which I see as a sign of women becoming more confident.

I don't know if most people know this or not, but the sign of Aquarius is one of androgyny. Astrologers would tell you that Aquarian males will have some feminine features (hips) and likewise the Aquarian females will have some masculine features (big shoulders maybe?). To further add to my point the Egyptian equivalent is the Age of Horus. Currently we are in the Age of Osiris (patriarchal, monotheism) after the male god. Previously we were in the Age of Isis (matriarchal, polytheism/paganism) the mother fertility goddess. The Age of Horus is a blending of the two ages since Horus was their son, thus the androgyny.

Leaky Gut Syndrome / Intestinal Permeability

Leaky gut syndrome is not generally recognized by conventional physicians, but evidence is accumulating that it is a real condition that affects the lining of the intestines. The theory is that leaky gut syndrome (also called increased intestinal permeability), is the result of damage to the intestinal lining, making it less able to protect the internal environment as well as to filter needed nutrients and other biological substances. As a consequence, some bacteria and their toxins, incompletely digested proteins and fats, and waste not normally absorbed may "leak" out of the intestines into the blood stream. This triggers an autoimmune reaction, which can lead to gastrointestinal problems such as:
  • Crohn's disease
  • food allergies
  • chronic intestinal candidosis (candida)
  • lupus
  • asthma
  • eczema
  • psoriasis
  • headaches / migraines
  • arthritis / rheumatoid arthritis
  • Raynaud's disease
  • acid reflux
  • multiple sclerosis
  • Coeliac's disease
  • chronic giardiasis
  • auto-immune diseases
  • digestive disorders
  • autism
As for the cause, it can be too much pills including aspirin, ibuprofen, pain killers, medication, improper diet (i.e. too much sugar which then allows yeast and the bad bacteria to grow more than the good bacteria that lines the intestines), constipation or irregular bowel movements to name a few.

How to fix it, remove the root causes and re-establish internal ecology:
  1. anti-fungals, anti-viral, anti-bacterial, antibiotic
  2. probiotics (Acidophilus, Bifido bacteria and L. casei)
  3. DGL (Deglycyrrhizinised liquorice)
  4. Cabagin (Vitamin U) [sulfur-derived] **Point of Interest**
  5. FOS (FructoOligoSaccharides) aka oligofructose / oligofructan  [prebiotic]
  6. butyric acid (as serine butyric)
  7. NAG ( (N-Acetyl Glucosamine)
  8. zinc ascorbate
  9. magnesium ascorbate
  10. Vitamin A
  11. GLA (Gamma-linolenic acid)
FOS are most rich in Jerusalem artichokes and dandelions. Its also found in onions, bananas, garlic, asparagus, wheat, barley, tomatoes, leeks, and chicory root. Its a natural food substance with the properties of a natural fiber. It occurs in fruits and vegetables. Because of the configuration of their osidic bonds, fructooligosaccharides resist hydrolysis by salivary, stomach,  and intestinal digestive enzymes while passing through largely undigested. In the colon they are fermented by anaerobic bacteria. In other words, they have a lower caloric value, whilst contributing to the dietary fiber fraction of the diet.  However, unlike other fiber supplements, FOS is an essential growth factor for beneficial intestinal bacteria. Once in the colon, FOS is selectively hydrolyzed and fermented by bifidobacteria to produce acetate and L(+) lactate. The lactate is then further metabolised by other bacteria to produce butyrate and propionate. According to BioMed review by Dr Torben Neesby (Feb 1990), research suggests that the production of butyrate in the colon could be essential for a healthy and functioning colonic mucosa.
So in conclusion, its often called a disease or condition of the 21st Century due to our high sugar, fast food, and artificial diet and the plethora of pills in all the colors of the rainbow. Taste the rainbow! lol

I decided to write about this because I know  more than a few people (me, myself, and I included ;) ) who might benefit from this information as well as find it interesting.

**Point of Interest**  - In a lot of creams or moisturizers for dry skin, eczema, dandruff, or psoriasis sulfur is a common ingredient. Hard water is often high in sulfur as well. But I found this interesting because the outside (macrocosm) mirrors the inside. Sulfur on the inside would probably be more helpful and beneficial than on the outside, otherwise its mostly just a band-aid approach. Another ingredient is selenium sulfide/sulfate. Why I mention that is because sulfur foods like cabbage, onions, garlic, asparagus and bananas with the selenium are foods that help the inside address the underlying condition at the root.

    Ophiuchus

I thought it would be appropriate to post something about this since it seems to have people all up in arms with the startling change in astrology. First off, its not something someone made up, least of all that British person that "supposedly" made this new discovery which wasn't new it was incorporated at other sites and charts since 2007.

'You can read elsewhere on the Internet that the problem of Ophiuchus was invented by the Royal Astronomical Society several years ago to bedevil we astrologers. Alas, if it were that simple! The problem of Ophiuchus is very old: at least nineteen hundred years old, if not more. It dates back to at least the time of Claudius Ptolemy, the Classical father of astrology [c 130 - 170 AD].'

The reason we never hear about it is simple, I think the main reason is it makes astrology more complicated or difficult since thirteen isn't divisible like twelve is. But I also blame it on those damn Romans and their Gregorian calendar with twelve months rather than the thirteen month moon cycle calendar we used to follow, the same kind of calendar those elusive Mayans followed.

'Why isn't Ophiucus in the Commonly-Used Western Zodiac? Ophiuchus is an Ancient Greek constellation. The Serpent Bearer is one of the original Ptolemy constellations, appearing in Al Magest Star Catalogue [c 130 - 170 AD]. He also appears on the Farnese Globe, a Roman copy of a circa 2nd century BC depiction of Atlas holding the Celestial Sphere above his head. So why isn't Ophiuchus a member of the standard astrological zodiac - the Tropical Zodiac? Ophiuchus is a Sun-sign. The Moon and planets all are seen against the stars of Ophiuchus. Unfortunately, the answer to the question is that Ophiuchus isn't in the Tropical Zodiac not because there is something wrong with Ophiuchus but because there is something wrong with the Tropical Zodiac. The Tropical Zodiac is an inaccurate oversimplification of the heavens dating from a time when we did not have telescopes or computers.'

Ophiuchus has other names, including Serpentarius (coined from Scorpio and Sagittarius since Ophiuchus falls between the two of them; Asclepius, a Greek god of healing; and Imhotep, a high priest of Ra, architect, engineer, and physician.

    The story went:
'He was the son of Apollo and Coronis. His mother was killed for being unfaithful to Apollo and was laid out on a funeral pyre to be consumed, but the unborn child was rescued from her womb. Or, alternatively, his mother died in labour and was laid out on the pyre to be consumed, but his father rescued the child, cutting him from her womb. From this he received the name Asklepios "to cut open". Apollo carried the baby to the centaur Chiron [a centaur, think Sagittarius ;) ] who raised Asclepius and instructed him in the art of medicine.

Zeus killed Asclepius with a thunderbolt because he raised Hippolytus from the dead and accepted gold for it. Other stories say that Asclepius was killed because after bringing people back from the dead, Hades thought that no more dead spirits would come to the underworld, so he asked his brother Zeus to remove him. This angered Apollo who in turn murdered the cyclops who had made the thunderbolt for Zeus. For this act, Zeus banned Apollo from the night sky and commanded Apollo to serve Admetus, King of Thessaly. After Asclepius' death, Zeus placed Asclepius among the stars as the constellation Ophiuchus ("the Serpent Holder").'

An alternate version of the story is:
'Asclepius learned the secrets of keeping death at bay after observing one serpent bringing another healing herbs. To prevent the entire human race from becoming immortal under Asclepius' care, Zeus killed him with a bolt of lightning, but later placed his image in the heavens to honor his good works.'

Because of that story Asclepius, like Mercury/Hermes is also associated with the caduceus.

Now why I think its significant at this point in time is simple. We are nearing the galactic equator (center of the Milky Way galaxy which as well know has a super-massive black hole), which just so happens to be the area where the constellation of Ophiuchus is or near. The date for the sign of Ophiuchus is between November 30th and December 17th each year however the dates of the cusps move a little from one year to the next, so sometimes they are quoted as December 1st to December 18th (maybe it could be the 21st after all?) just falls short of December 21st which as we all know is the end of the Mayan calendar.
(no gloom and doom end of the world, Hailey's comet, poison kool-aid, armageddon apocalypse here, just simply a Shift of the Ages and it also forewarns that we are entering into a solar flare maximum cycle.)

Its also significant because we are moving ever onward into the Age of Aquarius, the Water Carrier, the actual 13th, and last sign of the real solar zodiac and to those of you that know about the Tree of Life, Kabala type stuff you'd know that astrology is considered to be the magical power of Aquarius, coincidence? I think not! That's only there to say that astrology, or  the ability to recognize patterns in things, is more naturally inherent to an Aquarius, though all the signs have their own gifts/abilities/powers.

People always think that astrology tells or reveals your destiny, which couldn't be anymore further from the truth. In point and fact it merely shows what has shaped or influenced (or will shape and influence) your personality, not your what controls the fate or destiny of your life. The re-inclusion of the "new" zodiac sign merely is adding a new influence to our personality. Maybe the root cause of why many people don't want to hear that their sign has changed is because they fear change on some level? The heavens are always in a constant state of flux, there is nothing that stays the same forever so why do we think we can? Do we all stay at the level of infants? No. We grow, mature, and become smarter and then that passes on to the next generation.

Few people even realize that aside from this whole Ophiuchus thing there is another kind of astrology called Transpersonal Astrology. What this type does is it includes asteroids, meteorites, planetoids, and hypothetical planets. Its more concerned with expanding to higher levels of consciousness, beyond just the basics that most people are otherwise confined to and don't move beyond. There is even other sub-categories I guess you could call it which are called trans-Neptunian and trans-Plutonian planets. There may be trans-Uranian though I can't find a source off the top of my head but do believe I came across it at least once. I believe it was some Russian astrologer's site.
