Leaky Gut Syndrome / Intestinal Permeability

Leaky gut syndrome is not generally recognized by conventional physicians, but evidence is accumulating that it is a real condition that affects the lining of the intestines. The theory is that leaky gut syndrome (also called increased intestinal permeability), is the result of damage to the intestinal lining, making it less able to protect the internal environment as well as to filter needed nutrients and other biological substances. As a consequence, some bacteria and their toxins, incompletely digested proteins and fats, and waste not normally absorbed may "leak" out of the intestines into the blood stream. This triggers an autoimmune reaction, which can lead to gastrointestinal problems such as:
  • Crohn's disease
  • food allergies
  • chronic intestinal candidosis (candida)
  • lupus
  • asthma
  • eczema
  • psoriasis
  • headaches / migraines
  • arthritis / rheumatoid arthritis
  • Raynaud's disease
  • acid reflux
  • multiple sclerosis
  • Coeliac's disease
  • chronic giardiasis
  • auto-immune diseases
  • digestive disorders
  • autism
As for the cause, it can be too much pills including aspirin, ibuprofen, pain killers, medication, improper diet (i.e. too much sugar which then allows yeast and the bad bacteria to grow more than the good bacteria that lines the intestines), constipation or irregular bowel movements to name a few.

How to fix it, remove the root causes and re-establish internal ecology:
  1. anti-fungals, anti-viral, anti-bacterial, antibiotic
  2. probiotics (Acidophilus, Bifido bacteria and L. casei)
  3. DGL (Deglycyrrhizinised liquorice)
  4. Cabagin (Vitamin U) [sulfur-derived] **Point of Interest**
  5. FOS (FructoOligoSaccharides) aka oligofructose / oligofructan  [prebiotic]
  6. butyric acid (as serine butyric)
  7. NAG ( (N-Acetyl Glucosamine)
  8. zinc ascorbate
  9. magnesium ascorbate
  10. Vitamin A
  11. GLA (Gamma-linolenic acid)
FOS are most rich in Jerusalem artichokes and dandelions. Its also found in onions, bananas, garlic, asparagus, wheat, barley, tomatoes, leeks, and chicory root. Its a natural food substance with the properties of a natural fiber. It occurs in fruits and vegetables. Because of the configuration of their osidic bonds, fructooligosaccharides resist hydrolysis by salivary, stomach,  and intestinal digestive enzymes while passing through largely undigested. In the colon they are fermented by anaerobic bacteria. In other words, they have a lower caloric value, whilst contributing to the dietary fiber fraction of the diet.  However, unlike other fiber supplements, FOS is an essential growth factor for beneficial intestinal bacteria. Once in the colon, FOS is selectively hydrolyzed and fermented by bifidobacteria to produce acetate and L(+) lactate. The lactate is then further metabolised by other bacteria to produce butyrate and propionate. According to BioMed review by Dr Torben Neesby (Feb 1990), research suggests that the production of butyrate in the colon could be essential for a healthy and functioning colonic mucosa.
So in conclusion, its often called a disease or condition of the 21st Century due to our high sugar, fast food, and artificial diet and the plethora of pills in all the colors of the rainbow. Taste the rainbow! lol

I decided to write about this because I know  more than a few people (me, myself, and I included ;) ) who might benefit from this information as well as find it interesting.

**Point of Interest**  - In a lot of creams or moisturizers for dry skin, eczema, dandruff, or psoriasis sulfur is a common ingredient. Hard water is often high in sulfur as well. But I found this interesting because the outside (macrocosm) mirrors the inside. Sulfur on the inside would probably be more helpful and beneficial than on the outside, otherwise its mostly just a band-aid approach. Another ingredient is selenium sulfide/sulfate. Why I mention that is because sulfur foods like cabbage, onions, garlic, asparagus and bananas with the selenium are foods that help the inside address the underlying condition at the root.
